What’s the difference between a therapist and a life coach?
While your history and past are important and part of our work together, it is not the focus. As your coach, it is my job to take your personal story and use it as one tool to guide you with your current life and moving forward. Therapists are more talk-based versus action-based. Coaches emphasize the here-and-now to discover the best steps to help you proceed. I won’t tell you what to do or give you the answers, but I will empower you to find the solutions yourself.
Do you work with anyone and any issues?
Yes. I will work with any individuals who are motivated to make positive changes in their lives regardless of the obstacles holding them back. Not all of my clients have specific problems they want to solve; rather they may have goals they want to achieve or they simply want to improve certain aspects of their lives.
What if my daughter or son wants to work with you and is under 18 years old?
Many of my clients are under 18 and connect with me quickly. Since your daughter or son is a minor, I will need you to sign the form provided below, which covers the details and necessary agreements I require.
How long do clients normally work with you?
Most clients commit to at least 3 months, and many work with me for 6 months or longer. It typically takes 3 months to make changes and begin to put new actions sufficiently into motion that they become habitual. I also have clients who seek my guidance to satisfy short-term, specific, and time sensitive goals. It is your decision to determine the frequency and length of time that will best fit your needs.
What if I’ve been to treatment and seen therapists many times before only to stay stuck?
I personally felt the same way for over a decade. It seemed I had exhausted every possible option only to remain back at square one. The most important thing is to keep trying. You never know when you will connect with the right person at the right time that will make all the difference. I am passionate about mentoring individuals in this situation, as I know the feelings of despair and the gifts of freedom firsthand. Many people instantly find comfort and relief in the safe space I create, knowing that I can relate with their feelings while providing tangible proof that healing is possible.
Do I have to be working with a treatment team in order to work with you?
No. However, it is something I may recommend depending on your personal circumstances. If I do encourage you to seek additional support, it will be based on my thorough judgment with your best interest in mind. At this point, I will provide local resources and referrals I feel would be beneficial. Ultimately it is your choice how you would like to proceed.
Does coaching just take place in your office?
No! If you are a local client, we often take our sessions to various locations that are particular and symbolic to your goals. Examples include eating a meal or dessert with a client recovering from an eating disorder, or spending the session at a location where the individual may experience increased anxiety and stress. I also may accompany you to a personally challenging environment, such as an athletic event or grocery shopping. Other times I’ve found going for a walk on the beach, taking a gentle hike, or meeting at a quiet coffee shop can aid in altering the routine and repetition of sitting inside, while simultaneously providing opportunities to acquire new personal skills in creative ways.
